The Start Bay Inn

The Inn dates back to the 14th century and was known as the Fisherman's Arms and used by the local Fishermen, who worked their fishing boats from the village beach.

PaulStubbs retired as the landlord in April 2006. His daughter’s Clair and Gail along side son in law Stuart have decided to carry on the business. All three have gained immense experience while working as partner’s with Paul and are determined to carry on the good work. Lucky for us Paul enjoys his diving so much he is still going to dive for scallops for our customer’s pleasure.

In addition local fishermen work off the beach right in front of the pub and deliver all kinds of fish. This fish is then prepared on the premises.

A local crabber, Graham Lynn, drops crabs to the back door to be cooked and dressed immediately.  All our crab is hand picked by us.

Steaks are delivered by Durrant’s, a local butcher, and are cut up on the premises. Home made pork and apple and beef burgers are collected from Hannaford’s the village butchers.

We sell Devonian Spring Water, which is bottled just miles away. Heron Valley Cider and organic juices are very popular and are also produced locally. Most people are surprised and delighted at the taste of the local Sharpham Wine, which is produced on the banks of the river Dart.

Tantalising  traditional desserts are provided by Cottage Kitchens, a small business based in Kingsbridge, and are served with clotted cream or Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream.

Last but not least, why not try a pint of the local brew Otter Ale.

We recycle all of our glass, cardboard, tins and recyclable plastics and source our produce locally or from environmentally sustainable stocks wherever possible.

We hope you enjoy the experience
